I am currently leading an Earth System group at NTNU with a major focus on field and remote-sensed observations and numerical modeling of changes in glaciers and hydrology in Europe and Central Asia, including the development of early warning systems for glacial lake outburst floods. Since 2014, I have also acted as a principal investigator on international paleoglaciology projects focusing on reconstructions of past glaciations in Central Asia and Antarctica. Prior to my move to Norway, I was working with paleoclimate model reconstructions spanning the last deglaciation using coupled ice sheet-Earth System modeling at the University of Bremen and with ice sheet and geodynamic modeling at the German Research Centre for Geosciences. Finally, my undergraduate and graduate research revolved around pattern recognition techniques and development of geodynamic models.

Russell studies Earth's past climate using geochemical proxies from cave deposits (speleothems). He is part of the University of Melbourne’s Speleothem Science Research Group (www.speleothemscience.org). His current research focuses on the nature and causes of major climate transitions during the Quaternary Period, especially glacial terminations and abrupt 'millennial-scale' climate events. He is particularly interested in how these events play out regionally and across the globe, and what forces these changes. Russell works closely with oceanographers, ice-core scientists and palaeoclimate modellers to resolve these problems. Russell runs a fully equipped microsampling and stable-isotope laboratory dedicated to speleothem research. This lab complements the excellent suite of analytical instruments housed in the School of Earth Sciences. The stable-isotope lab has two Analytical Precision AP2003 continuous-flow stable isotope ratio mass spectrometers (C and O isotopes in carbonates); a Picarro CDR isotope analyser for measuring O and H isotopes in waters; and a Nu Instruments Perspective dual-inlet mass spectrometer for measuring small-sample (50 ug) conventional C and O isotopes as well as clumped-isotopes (delta-47) on carbonates (sample size ~500 ug). Russell welcomes enquiries from colleagues and their graduate students interested in running samples in his lab. I am a Professor of Geography at Swansea University, in the UK, and a climate change scientist. My research focuses on the past climate records stored in the rings of ancient trees, and on exploring how environmental change is impacting forests. My particular expertise is concerned with the application of palaeolimnology, bridging the gap between the ecological present and the past to assess the resilience of aquatic systems to increasing pressures from human activity, including modification and pollution, coupled with future projections in climate change.
